American Environmental Consulting, Inc. (AEC) was founded in 2012 by Ms. Kelly Eger-Smith, R.E.M., a 30-year veteran in the environmental field. Kelly’s vision was to build an environmental engineering firm that provides practical, cost-effective, business-minded solutions to real property environmental issues. AEC strategically employs a small, core staff of highly talented professionals and utilizes a broad network of specialized associates and business partners to serve our clients’ changing and evolving needs in a sensible and understandable way.


Ms. Kelly Eger-Smith began her career in environmental engineering science in 1991 as a chemist performing inorganic and organic chemistry, radiochemistry and microbiology. In 1995, she joined a national engineering firm as the Technical Operations Manager and Health & Safety Officer for the firm’s environmental testing laboratory in Orlando, Florida. In this role, she developed Quality Assurance & Quality Control manuals and standard operating procedures for specialized testing for the Department of the Army and the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service and she managed the associated Federal contracts. Ms. Eger-Smith directed the firm’s initiative to obtain ISO 9001 certification and facilitated routine audits by the Army and the Department of Energy. From 2000 to 2001, Ms. Eger-Smith served as the Chemistry Coordinator for the Reedy Creek Improvement District at Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida where she was responsible for overall quality assurance, technical direction, and production.
From 2001 through 2012, Ms. Eger-Smith was the managing Principal of the Central Florida office of a State-wide, multidiscipline engineering firm. Ms. Eger-Smith was responsible for business development, operational management, and the overall performance of the Central Florida office. In addition, she led the firm’s Environmental Engineering team and directed the firms Occupational Health and Safety Program. Ms. Eger- Smith was the Vice President of Human Resources and the Principal-in-Charge of Risk (Contract) Management from 2004-2012.
In 2012, Ms. Eger-Smith founded American Environmental Consulting, Inc. (AEC), a 100% woman-owned small business. Ms. Eger-Smith serves as the President of AEC and as a Senior Environmental Scientist. In this role, Ms. Eger-Smith is responsible for all technical services performed by the firm, human resources, insurance, contracts, quality assurance/quality control, business development, client service and daily operational management.


Ms. Eger-Smith has a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from George Mason University and completed graduate classes in Environmental Engineering at the University of Central Florida.
Ms. Eger-Smith is a member of ASTM’s E50 Committee on Environmental Assessment, Risk Management and Corrective Action. She is a Registered Environmental Manager (R.E.M.) and is OSHA 40 Hour HAZWOPER certified.
Mr. Derek Smith, C.E.S., began his environmental engineering career in 1996 as a chemist in Orlando, Florida where he performed inorganic and organic sample preparation and wet chemistry analyses. From 1998 to 2000, Mr. Smith managed the laboratory’s shipping and receiving department and was an integral team member during the conversion to a new Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS). Mr. Smith was a member of the laboratory’s Emergency Response and Hazardous Materials team.
In 2001, Mr. Smith joined the consultant team at the Florida Turnpike Division as a Right-of-Way Agent. Mr. Smith’s responsibilities included property asset management, right-of-way acquisition, disposal of surplus property, management of existing property leases, title review, review and resolution of property boundary and encroachment issues, and examination of conveyance documents. Mr. Smith represented the Turnpike at public hearings, meetings and related functions and handled public requests respective to surplus property disposition.
Mr. Smith transitioned into a career in real estate from 2008 to 2016. During that time, Mr. Smith worked with local and international developers to identify sites for new development and for redevelopment (residential and commercial). Mr. Smith procured and reviewed building condition reports, Phase I & II Environmental Site Assessments, ecological reports, and land surveys. Mr. Smith’s experience also included title examination and preparation of Ownership & Encumbrance reports for environmental institutional control deed restrictions.
Mr. Smith joined American Environmental Consulting, Inc. (AEC) in 2017 as a Senior Environmental Scientist. In this role, Mr. Smith is responsible for technical services performed by the firm including environmental sampling, data review, research, property inspections, report preparation, subcontractor oversight, and client interaction.
Mr. Smith is OSHA 40 Hour HAZWOPER certified.
